Gwyneth Paltrow closed her Goop health and wellness conference with a celebrity panel on Saturday, and no one kept it as real as Cameron Diaz.
The actress opened up about everything from why she’s taken a three-year break from acting to what made her decide to marry Benji Madden in 2015.
Diaz first said she decided to take a time out from Hollywood after two decades of non-stop travel from film set to film set. “I just went, ‘I can’t really say who I am, to myself. Which is a hard thing to face up to,” she said. Diaz decided to slow down. “I felt the need to make myself whole.”
Towards the end of the panel, Paltrow, who moderated, asked her famous friends assembled (including Tory Burch, Nicole Richie and Miranda Kerr) about their love lives. “Cameron, you got married later,” said Paltrow. “What was it that kept you from getting married until you were 40?”
“Forty one,” corrected Diaz with a grin. “I think it’s a matter of – I just hadn’t met my husband, you know? I had boyfriends before. And there’s a really, really distinct difference between husbands and boyfriends. And I have a husband who is … just my partner in life and in everything. Talk about two very different people, we are so different from one another but we share the same values … we’re totally two peas in a pod. We’re both just weird enough for each other.”
“We women are objectified so much,” she continued. “And somehow my husband has just been able to kind of show me what it’s like not to have that be apart of a relationship, and being an equal.”
Of course, Diaz and Richie are sisters-in-law; Richie has been married to Benji’s twin brother Joel (of Good Charlotte fame) since 2010. Richie called the Maddens “a very close family. They rely on each other. When we got together it was like, you’re just in the family. It’s a large support system.”
Diaz added that Benji supports her ambitions equally. “I never experienced that before. I’d never been loved in that way,” she said. “Where he and Joel came from and what they’ve accomplished in their lives…just the drive, for the purest reasons. They push themselves. I look at him every day and he inspires me. He works so hard. I feel so lucky.”
